Electrical faults are maddening precisely because they’re invisible: the trip that only happens at night, the socket that died for no reason, the flicker nobody else believes. Fault finding is the most skilled work in domestic electrics, a logical elimination process with proper test instruments, not swapping parts until something sticks. It’s also work we genuinely enjoy.
An RCD that trips is detecting a real leak of current, the question is where. Moisture in an outside socket, a failing appliance element, a nail through a cable from last year’s shelf. We isolate circuit by circuit, then item by item, until the culprit is found, not reset-and-hope.
Sometimes a failing connection (worth taking seriously, loose connections generate heat), sometimes LED/dimmer incompatibility, occasionally the supply itself. Each has a different fix; testing tells us which you have.
A socket that stops working usually means a broken connection upstream on the ring, we trace it, repair it, and test the whole circuit while we’re in it.
These are pre-fire symptoms, not quirks. Switch off at the main switch and treat it as an emergency.

Almost always water finding its way into an outdoor socket, light or junction. It’s protecting you exactly as designed; we find and reseal the entry point.
Usually not: a broken ring connection is often an hour’s find-and-fix. Left alone, though, it can overload the rest of the circuit, worth doing promptly.
In the rare case a fault won’t reproduce, you pay only the diagnostic time, and we’ll leave monitoring in place or a plan for catching it in the act. We don’t abandon puzzles.
Leave things as they are if it’s safe to, a fault that’s present is far quicker to find than one that’s resting.
